Elijah - The Grandest Prophet
by Pastor Ronald Boelte
His personal name means " my God is Yah" and he lived in the
Northern Kingdom. He was a very complex man and is often seen as the
grandest of all the prophets. When looking at his life we need to look at
it from four historical perspectives, which include: his miracles, his
struggles against Baal worship, his prophetic role, and his relationship
to the messiah.
Miracles:
His first miracle is also associated with his prophecy to King Ahab, in
which there would not be any rain or dew for three years in the land. His
second was the replenishing of the oil and flour for the widow. His third
was the raising of the widow's dead son. Fourth and most public was the
calling of fire from heaven to consume the sacrifice. Next was the
prophecy of rain, then the parting of the Jordan and finally taken to
heaven alive in a fiery chariot.
Baalism:
During his whole life, Elijah struggled against Baalism. The contest on
Mt. Carmel would show to all the people the power of Yahweh and the
impotence of Baal. Still the king and queen would not turn from their
false God and Elijah would flee the nation.
Prophet:
His prophetic role would place him in opposition to the majority of the
people and to the rulers of the Northern Kingdom. He would make prophecies
to King Ahab and his son Ahaziah and all of them came true.
Relationship to the Messiah:
Malachi prophesied that Elijah would return before the coming "day of
the Lord". Jesus points to John the Baptist as the one who went
before him in the power and spirit of Elijah. Elijah with Moses appeared
at Jesus' Transfiguration.
