Monday

Read: 1 Kings 16:28-34

Meditation: Here we are briefly introduced to Ahab. We are told about the evil that he brings into the nation, and that he was even worse than Jeroboam. This sets the stage for what is to come in the next few chapters of Kings, for they are mainly about him. However; we are also introduced to Elijah, Jezebel, and a few other characters. As we cover these last chapters of Kings, look to see just how evil Ahab was.

Prayer Starter: Focus on  Proverbs 20:7  for your prayers today.

Tuesday

Read: 1 Kings 17

Meditation: You may be saying to yourself: what does this chapter have to do with Ahab? As a direct result of the wickedness of the reign of Ahab, Elijah confronts the nation of Israel. It will not rain in Israel for the next three years and Elijah has to go into exile to protect his life. We see in this chapter how God protects the prophet until it is time to confront the king and his wickedness again.

Prayer Starter: Focus on  Psalm 17  for your prayers today.

Wednesday

Read: 1 Kings 18

Meditation: This story in chapter 18 of Kings is probably the most known story about Elijah and Ahab. This story illustrates the function of God's Word as it deals with: Death. Life. Law. Gospel. Judgment. Grace. It still functions in this way with us by pointing out our sin and showing us our need for a Savior. It then brings to us comfort, reassurance, absolving our sins, and protection against Satan's schemes and accusations. God's Word points out the death we deserve, so that we come to the salvation of our God that is provided by Christ's sacrifice.

Prayer Starter: Focus on  Proverbs 20:9  for your prayer today.

Thursday

Read: 1 Kings 19

Meditation: After his victory at Mt. Carmel and the proof that there is only one true God, Elijah must have thought that King Ahab and Queen Jezebel would fall down on their faces and worship the true God. The opposite occurred and disappointment flooded into Elijah's heart and he fled for his life, ready to die. However; God is not done with Elijah and through his tender mercy he leads Elijah to do other things for Him.

Prayer Starter: Focus on Romans 11:2-6  for your prayers today.

Friday

Read: 1 Kings 20

Meditation: Even though Ahab is not a true believer, God does help him deal with his enemies. We may wonder about this, but it was not yet time for the nation of Israel to go into exile. Ahab would receive help against his enemies, even though God would not get the credit from Ahab. How often does God allow wicked nation or rulers to stand until it is His time to bring them down? We see it all the time in the Bible. God has a plan and sometimes He uses these wicked nations as a part of His plan. We may wonder why, but in the end God will use it or them for His purpose.

Prayer Starter: Focus on Psalm 19  for your prayers today.

Saturday

Read: 1 Kings 21-22

Meditation: Israel's King Ahab is called by God one of the wickedest kings in scripture. Egged on by Queen Jezebel, Ahab illustrates the truth that "power corrupts". Just when you think Ahab can do no worse, we see that he can. However; the end is in sight. Ahab will be killed.

Prayer Starter: Focus on  Psalm 119:161-176   for your prayers today.
