Monday

Read: 2 Samuel 2-3

Meditation: Chaos ruled in the land after Saul's death. David's role as king is still on hold, at least for a little while. Civil war breaks out in the nation when David is made king of Judah and Ish-Bosheth king of Israel. During the war Abner kills the brother of Joab and later against David's wishes Joab kills Abner.

Prayer Starter: Lord, give me the patience I need to wait for the right time of doing and serving You.

Tuesday

Read: 2 Samuel 13

Meditation: The seeds of disobedience and neglect have sprouted in David's family. His family problems have been ignored and his family will soon be full of rape and murder by Amnon and Absalom. What could have David done? Where could have David intervened? These questions can also be asked by many of us in our different family situations.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me and my family in dealing with the problems that will come. Forgive us when we fail.

Wednesday

Read: 2 Samuel 14-15

Meditation: The family problems of David continue. David has ignored Absalom rage just as he had ignored Tamar's pain and grief. Because of this Amnon is killed by Absalom and David overlooks this sin and murder. David refuses to sit down with Absalom to talk things through and in Absalom's rage he plots to overthrow David's kingdom. Problems do not go away, but often get worse with time.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to open a dialogue with someone I have a problem with.

Thursday

Read: 1 Samuel 5:11  1 Kings 5

Meditation: Hiram offers David a gift of cedar wood to help in building his palace. Later when Solomon takes over and reigns in Israel, Hiram would again offer wood and laborers to help build a temple to God. Hiram is no fool for he can offer trade that would be a benefit to both kingdoms. His nation prospers right along with the nation of Israel.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to build friendships that will help spread the news of You into the whole world.

Friday

Read: 2 Samuel 11-12

Meditation: What a beautiful woman she must have been. Bathsheba is the cause of David's great sin that should have cost him his life and the kingdom. He has committed adultery and murder and God is mad. However, unlike Saul, David repents from his sin and God in His grace and love forgives the sins of David.

Later Bathsheba and David would have a son, Solomon, who would rule the nation after David's death.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to see the sins I commit and help me to repent from them. Forgive me Lord.

Saturday

Read: 1 Kings 1-2

Meditation: David is old and weak and yet he has to face one more plot that could derail the Lord's promise about the Messiah. Adonijah, Joab, and Abiather are clever, but God has plans and Solomon will become the king so that the promises of God will come true.

The same is true today. The Lord has promised that He rules the events on earth for the good of the church, and we can trust in that assurance. We also have the promise of the gift of life now and forever, and we can live and one day die in that confidence. The promises of God can not be waylaid by the world or by Satan.

Prayer Starter: Lord, thank You for all of the promises You have given to me through Your Son Jesus Christ. Amen.
