David - An Old Testament Epic

In the life of David there are many characters. The following is a
short list of some of the more important ones.
- Abner- Saul's relative and the commander in chief of his
army. He is loyal to Ish-Bosheth after Saul's death. Later he joins
David and than is murdered by Joab.
- Absalom- Son of David by Maacah. Traitor to David and tried
to take kingdom by force and is killed by Joab.
- Adonijah- Son of David by Haggith. And tries after David's
death to declare himself king.
- Amnon- Son of David by Abinoam. Rapes Tamar his half-sister
and is murdered by order of Absalom.
- Bathsheba- Wife of Uriah the Hittite. She is taken in
adultery by David and is later married to him. Solomon is her son.
- Hiram- King of Tyre on the western coast of Lebanon. Sent
ceder wood and workmen to Jerusalem for David's palace. Later he would
furnish wood for Solomon's temple.
- Ish-Bosheth- Only son of Saul who survived. He was a weak
ruler and is killed by Recab and Bannah to try to carry favor with
David.
- Joab- David's nephew and chief commander. Devoted to David
during his reign. Solomon ordered Joab's death after he sides with
Adonijah in trying to take over the kingdom.
- Mephilboseth- Son of Jonathan son of Saul. He was only five
years old when his father died. Crippled in both feet, David had him
brought to Jerusalem and provided for him.
- Michal- Saul's younger daughter and David's first wife. She
helped save David life from her father. Later given to Paltiel by Saul
in an attempt to remove David from his life. David returns her to his
household after becomes king, but later she is estranged from him.
- Solomon- Son of David and Bathsheba. Succeeded his father on
the throne.
Tamar- Absalom's Sister. Half-sister of Amnon who rapes her.
