Monday

Read: 1 Samuel 13

Meditation: Jonathan is introduced to us in this chapter of Samuel. We see that he is a leader of 1,000 men and that he uses them to attack the enemies of Israel. We also begin to see the downfall of Saul by offering a sacrifice that he should not have offered. Jonathan is doing what God has called him to do but Saul is not.

Prayer Starter: O Lord, I am often in what seems to be a no-win situation. Help me to look to You for the solutions I need to answer my dilemmas.

Tuesday

Read: 1 Samuel 14

Meditation: One is a majority if you have God on your side. This is the premise that Jonathan is working with as he goes to battle with the Philistines. The Lord does not disappoint him and the Philistines are routed. As you look at this chapter, look at the difference between Saul's foolhardy oath and Jonathan's faith-based confidence.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me in my battles, especially when I battle Satan. With You by my side I can go against any enemy and You will give me victory.

Wednesday

Read: 1 Samuel 18

Meditation: Jonathan becomes a life-long friend of David. They are one in spirit, which means they think alike. However, Saul becomes jealous and tries to kill David, not once but twice and then conspires to have him killed by others.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to have a friend like Jonathan in my life.

Thursday

Read: 1 Samuel 19-20

Meditation: Jonathan is a true friend to David and warns him of His father's desire to kill him. Jonathan even suffers his father's wrath to speak up for his friend. Saul will not hear it; he wants David dead.

Prayer Starter: Lord, Satan tries to eliminate God's people from their faithful witness. Help to remind us that the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world.

Friday

Read: 1 Samuel 23

Meditation: Jonathan goes to David to offer him strength, now that he is a fugitive in the nation of Israel. David has enemies on all sides, Saul on one side and the Philistines on the other side. What a good time for this good friend to show up to encourage David.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to always follow Your lead and do what is right in my life and to be there for others who need my encouragement.

Saturday

Read: 1 Samuel 31

Meditation:
The end of Jonathan comes, along with two of his brothers and his father, Saul. Jonathan has been faithful to God and to David all of his life. His death will open the way for David to become King of Israel.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to have faithfulness to the end, for You and for those I call my friends. Amen.
