Jonathan - A True Friend
by Pastor Ronald Boelte

Jonathan means "the Lord gave" in the Hebrew language. Indeed Jonathan was a true gift from God to David. He was also the oldest son of King Saul and became David's closest friend. The Bible tells us that Jonathan was humble, loving, brave and unselfish. This was completely different than Saul, his father.

He was a great leader of men and was a leader of a thousand solders. This was one third of all the solders kept in arms by Saul. He was good with the sword and the bow and often in battle was one that would lead from the front.

What makes Jonathan's loyalty to David even more remarkable is that he knew that David would one day occupy the throne that would otherwise be his. Even when Jonathan's father sought to kill David, Jonathan remained a true friend and protected David from his father when he could.

After Jonathan and King Saul died in battle, David mourned for both of them, but especially Jonathan. Their loving friendship which was cemented by their faith in God has been an example for all people throughout history of what a true friendship should be like.

True friendship is a blessing from God. Have you been blessed with a friend like Jonathan, or are you that kind of friend to someone else? If not, maybe you should be looking to find a friend that will be there for you in all circumstances.
