Monday

Read: 1 Samuel 2:11 & 26  Luke 2:52

Meditation: Samuel was born in answer to Hannah's tearful prayer and promise of him being given to do God's work, for she was barren. After he was weaned, he was raised by Eli the priest at the Shiloh sanctuary. We are told that Samuel grew "both in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men" (1 Sam. 2:26 NASB) and when you compare it with the reading from Luke you see a similar statement made about Jesus. What a great person this boy, Samuel will become in the service to God.

Prayer Starter: Lord, all of us who have been baptized have, just like Samuel, been dedicated to You. Help us to live up to that great honor as Your special people. Amen.

Tuesday

Read: 1 Samuel 3

Meditation: Samuel met God and receive his first prophetic mission as a young lad. It will not be his last. However, this first message concerns Eli and his sons. Samuel will have to tell Eli, his mentor, that God has rejected him and his family from the service as priest as punishment for the sins of Eli's sons. Samuel at first did not want to reveal the message, but Eli insisted and the message was given. It would all come true in a few short years, but in the mean time Samuel continues to grow in stature in the Lord and with men.

Prayer Starter: Lord, how often I am faced with hard messages that need to be given to help others follow You. Forgive me when I fail and help me to receive and messages You send to me from other people. Amen.

Wednesday

Read: 1 Samuel 7

Meditation: Following the death of Eli and his sons, Israel experienced 20 years of Philistine oppression. Israel began to call out for the Lord's help and with Samuel's intervention and prayers and Israel's repentance the Lord helped them and drove the Philistines from the land. This sets Samuel up as a judge of Israel.

Prayer Starter: Lord, how often must we suffer because we ignore You as our true God. Help us to look to You for all things. Amen.

Thursday

Read: 1 Samuel 8

Meditation: When Samuel is starting to get old, he starts to make plans of how Israel will be lead when he is dead. However, the people of Israel have other plans and want a king to rule over them. They do not see that this will cause all kinds of problems for them, and the nation in the future. They just want to be like all the other nations and have an earthly king. Samuel can not change their minds, and he sends the people home with the promise he will do what they want.

Prayer Starter: Lord, how often we think we know what is best for us and want things that could harm us. Help us to follow what You want for us in our lives. Amen.

Friday

Read: 1 Samuel 10

Meditation: Samuel anoints Saul to be king. Samuel also sets the stage for future prophets to call their monarchs to tasks of obedience to God's commands and also for disobedience and overstepping God's limits for kingship in Israel Samuel puts forth and records the rights and duties of the kingship, but Saul is already doing things that go against what God wants him to do as king. This will eventually get Saul and his family replaced in the kingship by David and his family.

Prayer Starter: Lord, forgive me when I overstep Your commands and go in my own way. Amen.

Saturday

Read: 1 Samuel 25:1   1 Samuel 28:3-20

Meditation:
Samuel dies and brings on national mourning by the people. Saul is left without any guidance from God and seeks to find help by going to a medium. The medium does as instructed and the spirit of Samuel is allowed by God to talk to Saul.. What Saul finds out scares him and causes him to stop eating. Soon this final prophesy of Samuel will come true and Saul will be dead.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me not to be like Saul. Forgive me when I am disobedient and help me to see the way I should go to serve You and others. Amen.
