Monday

Read: Judges 4:1-3

Meditation: Again the people of Israel do what is evil to the Lord and the Canaanite people were able to conquer the people of Israel. The Canaanites were to have been completely destroyed so that they could not rise again as a nation, and Joshua had defeated them in battle 170 years earlier, but they had not destroyed them completely. The applications to our own lives is evident. Our own failure to completely destroy the fleshly self-indulgences in our lives will allow them to grow back again to haunt us. Satan will use these inner enemies to bring us also back into bondage if we are not on constant guard.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to defeat my enemies of flesh completely. Help me to be on guard for Satan's attacks.

Tuesday

Read: Judges 4:4-5

Meditation: Our heroine is introduced. We see her titles as a prophetess, and judge. Later on she will be called a great warrior, and "a mother of Israel". She lives in the hills not far from Jerusalem and is aware of the suffering that her people are suffering from the Canaanite people. Her life is an example what God will do through those women or men who are devoted to Him. In this case the course of history is changed through a great military victory. Deborah saw the need of the people, knew the promises of God, and made herself available to God. It was God who gave the plan: all that was required was obedience and courage.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to see the needs of those You place in my life. Help me to be obedient and give me the courage I need to carry out Your plans.

Wednesday

Read: Judges 4:6-9

Meditation: General Barek was probably a capable man, but he was lacking in self-confidence. He would not go without Deborah and because of this we see the honor of killing the great general, Sisera going to another.
Deborah knew that with God the victory would be theirs. Barak was sure that would happen if Deborah was with them to help lead the army.

Prayer Starter: Lord, how often we fail to see that You are with us. How often we rely on others to help get the job done that You wanted us to do ourselves. Forgive me Lord, and help me to put my whole trust in You.

Thursday

Read: Judges 4:10-24

Meditation: The battle is won. Sisera escapes for a little while, but is killed by the women, Jael who drives a tent spike through his head. The Canaanite people grow weaker as Israel grows stronger, until the king of Canaan and his people are destroyed. Deborah and the people have followed God again to victory. With God they are given the power they need to remain free, without God they soon fall prey to the ungodly people around them.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to see that when I am with You nothing is impossible, but on my own I will soon fall.

Friday

Read: Judges 5:1-3

Meditation: Barak and Deborah bring the leaders together to sing a song offering their praises to God who had brought about a great victory. They want all the world to hear and understand who brought the victory to them.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to praise You in all things, for without You I can do nothing.

Saturday

Read: Judges 5:4-31

Meditation:
The song of praise is a long one. It tells the whole story of God's victory over the people of Canaan. It shows us Deborah and Barak's part, and which tribes answered the call for battle. It tells of Jael and how she tricks Sisera and kills him. It tells of victory and peace for 40 years.

Prayer Starter: Lord, help us to sing a song of praise to You for all that You have done for us in our lives, and also what You have done through Your Son Jesus. Amen.
