Read: Joshua 7:1 James
2:17
Meditation: Even though Achan acted alone, God says that the
Israelites have "acted unfaithfully". The James passage tells
us that "faith without works is dead." In the church it is
easy to see that obedience is a natural outgrowth of faith. If faith
produces obedience than lack of faith must produce disobedience. If
Achan truly believed that God was looking after him and all the people
why would he do this thing. Either he must of not believed that God
could see what he was doing, or that God would not punish the
disobedience.
Prayer Starter: Lord, how often I sin because my faith is
weak. Forgive me and help me to have a greater faith.
Read: Joshua 7:2-23
Meditation: The sin of covetousness is probably the root cause of
the majority of our problems and sins. Every sin of adultery and theft are
directly connected with coveting, and the majority of sins that involve
lying, and murder may also involve coveting. Lets face it, we are a people
that upholds and applauds personal ambition and achievement and the
acquisition of all sorts of material things. If we don't have it we are seen
as a failure, and for some that may mean doing what is wrong to get what we
want.
Prayer Starter: Lord, help me not to be one who covets what others
may have, and forgive me when I do.
Read: 1 Timothy 6:10 Matthew
6:19-21
Meditation: Coveting is a problem that faces all of us. We may
rationalize in our mind that we are not storing up treasure on this earth,
but saving for that rainy day. That we do not love money, and yet only give
a little of what God has blessed us with back to Him. Lets face it God wants
us to put our whole faith in Him. To obey Him. To give him our all.
Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to better at giving what I have to
those that are in need, and help me to not covet what others
have.
Read: Joshua 7:24-26
Meditation: The reason for the whole nation to suffer at Achan sin
was because God had said it was to be a holy war and all the tribute of
Jericho was His. Achan then confesses his sin, but the punishment was
already set. The stolen property along with everything that belonged to
Achan was stoned and burned. This included his family and Achan. They were
then covered over with a pile of stones to mark the place and as a warning
to others. To some this may seem harsh, but because of his sacrilegious
theft he had put the whole nation of Israel in jeopardy. Joshua wanted to
make sure that this did not happen again.
Prayer Starter: Lord, help me not to be like Achan, help me to be
one that puts my whole trust in You.
Read: Acts 5:1-11
Meditation: God is a work in this new church and many have
believed and have sold their possessions and brought the offering to the
apostles to be used by the church. Ananias and his wife, Sapphira also sell
some land. However they agree to say it brought so much when it really
brought more. They had agreed to lie to God and to the apostles. Because of
this they are both stuck dead, but the people of the church was struck with
a great fear for these events showed what God would and would not allow.
Achan coveted as did Ananias and Sapphira. Just like them we see, we take,
we keep and we apparently keep it hidden from ourselves and from others, and
just like Israel, we are losing the battle and no one seems to understand
why.
Prayer Starter: Lord, coveting involves so much and just like all
other sins I try to hide it from You, myself and especially others. Forgive
me Lord.
Read: Joshua 7:10-11
Meditation: Joshua fell on his face and tore his cloths, and
raised the question about what had happened. He went to the Lord and the
Lord told him to get up, that Israel had sinned by taking what is mine.
They have stolen from me and put in with their own stuff. We too have
often neglected to give as God would want, and from what we give we
often use that small portion to minister to our own special concerns for
our comfort, convenience, or pride. Is it possible that we are guilty of
stealing from God?
Prayer Starter: Lord, I know that I have often failed to give
and use Your gifts to me in the way that would bring glory to You and
Your church. Forgive me and help me to be one that truly gives of
myself. Amen.
