Korah: The Leader of the Rebellion
by Pastor Ronald Boelte
Korah is the son of Izhar, in the family of Kohath, and a great
grandson of Levi. As a Levi he is a worker for the priesthood during Moses
and Aaron's time. He and three others, leads 250 people to rebel against
Aaron's claim for the priesthood and Moses's claim for the authority in
general over all the tribes. He contends that the whole congregation has
been sanctified by God and therefore they are qualified to perform the
priestly functions. The details of what happen will be covered this week
in our study of the man. However, when you go up against God and those who
have been appointed by Him you better be careful.
One of the reasons Korah may have rebelled is because he had a vision
in which he had seen his decedents doing great things for God. What he
forgot was that this vision was for his decedents not him. When he tried
to take things into his own hands to have a more prominent role in the
worship of God in the tabernacle, he almost caused these visions not to
come true.
His story while gruesome in some ways, shows us what can happen when
going against God's plans. The nation of Israel and its leadership of
priesthood had been established by God. To go against it was a dangerous
thing to do.
