Miriam: Prophetess of God
by Pastor Ronald Boelte
Miriam is the daughter of Amram and is the sister to Aaron and Moses. When
Moses was put into the Nile River, she was the one who watched from a
distance until Pharaoh's daughter took him up out of the river. She
approached the princess to see if she would have a Hebrew nurse to care
for the child, and the princess assented to this and Moses was spared from
death. He was also raised by his mother for the princess.
Miriam plays an important part in the nation of Israel after they cross
the Red Sea. She and other women sing a song of triumph for what God had
done for them. It is at this time that Miriam is called a Prophetess and
along with Moses and Aaron is one of the leaders of the people of Israel.
Miriam can also be spelled Marim from the Hebrew and from that spelling
her name would mean "bitter". She was born during the time that
the Egyptians were beginning to embitter the live of the Israelites, and
her name might have been given in response to those arduous tasks that
were being placed upon all the people.
Miriam is mention only once as to have opposed Moses. She and Aaron
spoke against Moses on account of his marriage to the Cushite woman. God
then summoned Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to the tabernacle to rebuked her
and God then punished her with leprosy. She is healed by God because of
Moses' prayer for her, but was obliged to remain outside the camp for the
next 7 days. Miriam later died in the desert at Kadesh, where she was
buried.
