Read: Genesis 38:1-10
Meditation: We set the stage for Tamar. Death and evil are
mentioned, but it is not Tamar's fault. God is the one who brings on
these tragedies in Judah's life. Tamar is a innocent victim, but Judah
wants no more to do with her. However, Tamar has other plans, and God
honors her.
Prayer Starter: O Lord, help me to see the plans You have for
me. Help me not to do it my way, but follow Your ways.
Read: Genesis 38:11-26
Meditation: Judah is dishonest with Tamar. She only wants to have
a child that will carry on the line of Judah. The way she goes about it may
not have been the best way, but God honors her and she is found to be with
child by Judah.
Prayer Starter: Lord, we often take matters into our own hands. It
may not have been the best way to have done it, but often you honor it.
Thank You for Your love and understanding.
Read: Genesis 38:27-30
Meditation: These few passages may not seem like much and yet a
closer look reveals an anecdote about the struggle to be the first born and
the birthright and inheritance going all the way back to Cain and Abel,
Isaac and Ishmael, Jacob and Esau, Joseph and his brothers, and many, many
others. The genealogy of this family and the struggles they faced are
important, for it leads to Jesus. Tamar's twins is a correction of sorts
that sets right the story of the birth of Jacob and Esau, on which it is
based. Perez succeeded in coming out first where Jacob did not. Zerah,
Perez's twin, also becomes a forefather of the Judah tribe where Esau is
excluded from the dynasty of Israel.
Prayer Starter: Lord, Your plans may not seem clear to us at
first. Help me to see You as the one that has the best plan in mind for
me.
Read: 1 Chronicles 2:1-6
Meditation: This brief genealogy mentions all of Judah's sons.
While it may not seem important at first glance, it does shows us that only
the sons of Tamar would have a prominent place in the history of Israel.
Shelah, who was the third son of the Canaanite woman that Judah had married,
is not shown here to have any sons showing that he would not be a major
player in the history of Judah and of Israel.
Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to see that the line of Judah is
important and that Your son was born from that line.
Read: Ruth 4:1-13
Meditation: This story of Ruth and her destiny may not seem that
important at first glance. However, Boaz is from the tribe of Judah and
Perez. In this transaction, Ruth would become Boaz's wife and this foreign
woman would be a part of the line that would lead to Jesus. Tamar is
mentioned as a prominent figure here and is now seen and held in high esteem
by the family. In verse 12 of Ruth, Tamar is blessed retroactively and is
given full credit for her deeds by the one that is named kinsman-redeemer.
Prayer Starter: God, You have plans that sometimes take centuries
to happen. Help me not to become impatient when I do not see things happen
the way and as fast as I want them too.
Read: Matthew 1:1-16
Meditation:
Here we see the genealogy of Jesus starting with Abraham. In verse
three Tamar's name is mentioned which is not a common practice. Even
Matthew saw the importance of Tamar and how the line of Judah would have
not continued if not for her. What a bold statement made by Matthew
about a very determined woman.
Prayer Starter: Lord, help me to face my challenges in life
like Tamar.
