Kind David - Life is Sweet (But
not Always)
by B.J. Armstrong
Wouldn't we all like to have the life of King David? He was a talented
musician from birth it would seem. He was very courageous as a young boy
as was evident in his so-called "battle" with Goliath (it wasn't
much of a battle). He became the greatest king of Israel. His household
would produce the promised Messiah. The list goes on and on.
As we look into the characters of the Old Testament, David is certainly
one that jumps out at us. David is special. God called David to be His
servant at an early age, and David, while he sinned many times, stayed
faithful and true to God until the day of his death.
We too have been called by God from our birth. Many of us have followed
God closely all throughout our lives and some of us have fallen away at
one point in our lives. Either way, we all have sinned. Because of the
presence of sin in the world we have to face calamity and struggle
everyday. It is during this struggle that our faith is truly tested.
The same was true with David. Sure we could look at all of the uplifting
times in David's life and be encouraged, but this week we will look at the
times when David was struggling.
We turn to the story of David when he was fleeing from his son Absalom.
Even though David had been true and faithful to God, for whatever reason,
God chose for David to have to flee from Jerusalem. As we read, notice the
tone of David. He is sad and mourning, but also still very firm in his
faith.
This is an example for us. Even though we may struggle and life may
throw us into some turbulent times, that does not give us the right to
lose our faith. On the contrary, our faith should be strengthened by our
calamity. As the Lord told Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians,
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness" (12:9).
