Our Father Who art in Heaven
by Pastor Ronald Boelte

(This article is a reprint from the week of October 22, 2000. The underlying theme is that God is Lord over all, so be content with what he has given you.)

The Lord’s Prayer is the one prayer that all Christians of all faiths have used throughout all of time since being given to us by Jesus. Jesus gave this example of prayer to us so that we would feel confident to come to God in prayer.

If we were asked the question: Is heaven the home of God? we could answer with a resounding Yes! For Jesus tells us that our Father is in heaven. This being true what does it mean? Martin Luther tells us in his Small Catechism that "these words assure us that our heavenly Father, as Lord over all, has the power to grant our prayers." Acts 17:24 says: The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth. Using the teaching of the ancient Israelites they would see God in heaven as the key to understanding that He is universal, meaning that God was not limited to a certain location, but a God of all creation and of all the people of earth. Not only was God concerned with the people of Israel, but of all people and nations. God cannot be contained, or limited to just heaven. King Solomon tells us in 2 Chronicles 6:18: But will God really dwell on earth with men? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! Yes! Jesus tells us that our God and Father is in Heaven, but as you can see this means so much more to the Christian.
