God's Word: The Law
by BJ Armstrong
We live in a society filled with laws. We have traffic laws, zoning
laws, and many other rules and regulations that, at times, seem highly
inconvenient. Most people, however, recognize the importance of these
laws. Every society in the world has some form of law, some code of right
and wrong. Without laws, most would agree, the world would be a madhouse.
God's Law is no different. It is filled with rules and regulations that
many times seem very inconvenient to our way of life. God's law, like
Himself, is holy, righteous, and good. Though it threatens and accuses
sinners, the Law does so as part of God's plan to reveal our sin and our
subsequent need for salvation in the person of Christ, who both fulfilled
the Law and suffered its condemnation on our behalf.
Many people want to look at the Gospel in God's word, but would rather
avoid reading about the Law. The convicting power of the Law produces an
uneasiness in us that is often too uncomfortable for us to bear;
therefore, we flee from it quickly before it hits us right smack in the
face. The truth is, we need the Law to smack us in the face. If there is
no Law, there is no Gospel. If there is no Gospel, there is no salvation.
Therefore, as you go about your devotions this week, focus not only on the
convicting presence in God's Law, but also the grace behind it. It is this
grace that will allow us to focus on God's Law in our lives (and how
important it is to understand the Law) without running away from it.
