The Four Pillars
Part 9 in a series by Ronald Boelte

These Are Written

This week will end our study on the four Pillars (the four Gospels). John chooses to end His gospel with what seems to be an aside: "Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name." John 20:30-31

This is no insignificant footnote. John helps us to see the purpose of his Gospel and indeed the other three pillars, and in reality the whole Bible.

The Bible is an amazing book. More than 10,000 copies of handwritten scriptures have been found from ancient times. More than any other book, and since the invention of the printing press it has topped the best seller list every year. It has been published into 2,000 different languages and each year sees 100,000,000 more Bibles put in distribution. In the age of video, TV and radio people still continue to read and the Bible is the most treasured and read of all books published.

This is God's book. Over 2,000 times God says, "Thus says the Lord" or its equivalent. And the core of the Bible is Jesus. Throughout the Bible the Holy Spirit works faith in our hearts, bringing us Christ and through Him: forgiveness, life and heaven.

What a wonderful reminder that John gives us at the end of his Gospel. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is recorded in God's Word for a purpose. Let us read it again and believe it, live it, and share it with others. After all "these are written."
