In Him Was Life

When we look at all of the Gospels, the book of John is the most complex and theological. It goes into great detail concerning the divinity of Jesus.

The opening of John is clearly a parallel to the opening of the Old Testament, Genesis. Both books open with the words "In the Beginning..." John also goes on to point out that Jesus is the incarnate "Word". Jesus is co-equal and co-eternal, and helped in the creation of the world 1:1-2, 10. He also tells us in 1: 4 that Jesus is also the giver and sustainer of all life. In fact He is God.

We may take it all for granted, but the fact remains: without Jesus there is only decay and death. Even science says that the entire universe is wearing down and will someday die, and when we look around us in this world, we see only death and destruction.

All life on this earth has a birth, it grows, and then soon dies. It is what we call the cycle of life. We can not escape from it no matter how hard we try. Eventually all of us will take our last breath and die.

Not only is the world dying physically, but for many there is also spiritual death. Our world is lost in sin, and many have turned away from God heading toward eternal destruction.

It is into such a world that John talks of Jesus as the One and only One who has life. Throughout this book we see this theme being repeated over and over again. The most famous being John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. But other passages that John uses to stress this same thought are: 6:35,45 "the bread of life"; 11:25 "resurrection and life"; 14:6 "the way and the truth and the life"; and 10:10 "I have come that they may have life, and it to the full". If you ware to check your concordance you would be amazed how often the word Life appears in this book, but what could we not expect from a book that begins with the declaration: "in him was life" 1:4!
