It has often been said that "truth is often stranger than
fiction". When we look at the world and life around us, often
unexpected events reinforce this maxim. An example of this might be a
person that seems to have unlimited wealth has to declare bankruptcy, and
a person living in poverty or limited means has a secret fortune.
As we read this week we will see an unexpected twist of life. Jesus in
Luke 13:30 puts forth: "Indeed there are those who are last who will
be first, and first who will be last". Jesus in His three ministry
was often rejected by the religious elite. These were the people that know
the Old Testament prophecies and should have known who Jesus was and did
not. On the other hand many of the people with questionable characters
were the ones that saw and believed.
What is God saying in many of the parables and stories in the Bible is
that God looks at the heart. Your outward appearances make no difference,
for it is only by God's grace–by what Jesus Christ has done on the cross–
that we are saved.
As you continue to read Luke, begin to look for those first-last
twists. Some of the ones you may want to focus on are Luke 18:16-17;
18:25; 18:27. To those of us that recognize that we are sinners and humbly
pray, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner" Luke 18:13 will be
forgiven. To the world we may be considered the last and most foolish of
people, but in God's eyes we are the first to enjoy God's gift of
forgiveness and salvation.
