Monday

Read: Matthew 14-15

Meditation: So far Jesus has approached only the Jews, but in chapter 15 we see Jesus beginning to reach out to the Gentiles. As we look at these two chapters, focus on the King and His message.

  • 14:1-12; The King’s messenger is murdered.
  • 14:13-36 The King shows His care for the people.
  • 15:1-20; The King’s laws are perverted.
  • 15:21-39; The King shows His love for the Gentiles.

Prayer Starter: King Jesus I ask for Your help to keep my focus on You. That way I will not want to please only myself.

Tuesday

Read: Matthew 16-17

Meditation: Matthew address the fact that Jesus is truly the King whom God the Father had promised to send into our world.

  • Ch 16; The identity of the King.
  • Ch 17; The glory of the King.

Prayer Starter: Lord help me to see and to confess any sin I might have in not believing You to be the King of the universe. Give me the faith to believe all things about You.

Wednesday

Read: Matthew 18-19

Meditation: Often when we hear of Kingdoms we think of government and bureaucrats, however it is clear in today’s readings Jesus is talking about a kingdom that consists of individuals bound to Him and to one another in a lasting relationship.

  • Ch 18; Forgiveness in the kingdom.
  • Ch 19; Entrance to the kingdom.

Prayer Starter: Lord as I think about how You have forgiven me for so much, I now ask You to help me to forgive those that I may have a grudge against and have not forgiven.

Thursday

Read: Matthew 20-21

Meditation: Jesus’ identity as Israel’s Messiah and King was not hard to see. His teachings and miracles clearly showed who He was and yet those closest to Him, His disciples, often seemed shortsighted at times. As you read today ask yourself why that might have been.

  • 20:1-28; The King talks of greatness in the kingdom.
  • 20:29-21:11; The King talks about King David’s greater Son.
  • 21:12-46; The King’s subjects reject the King’s son.

Prayer Starter: Jesus, help me to open my eyes to You. Help me to treasure You above all other things in my life.

Friday

Read: Matthew 22-23

Meditation: Jesus tried to tell the Pharisees and Sadducees that God was not interested in their religion. They were only interested in doing the rituals and trying to prove their own worthiness. The seven woes that Jesus calls down on them is also a warning for us. Do any of them hit close to home?

  • Ch 22; Israel rejects their Messiah-King.
  • Ch 23; Israel breaks the Messiah-King’s heart.

Prayer Starter: Lord help me not to reject You. Take me under Your wing and protect me.

Saturday

Read: Matthew 24-25

Meditation:
What a shock Jesus’ words must have been to the disciple in 24: 1-2. Just look at the question they ask in verse 3. Jesus goes on to talk about Himself and what it means to be a servant in His kingdom.

  • 24:1-25:13; The King talks about His return.
  • 25:14-46; The King talks about rewards for His servants

Prayer Starter: Lord because of You we will receive an inheritance and a new title: the righteous ones (25:37). Help me to have a new eagerness to serve You and others just as You have served me.
