As we begin our look at the first four books of the New Testament we
see how those writers focus on the life and work of Jesus, and yet they
have there own way of presenting Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God,
sent to redeem and save all people.
One of a church fathers, Irenaeus of Lyons (A.D.140-202) once reflected
upon these four books this way "as there are four quarters of the
world... and also four universal winds, and as the church is scattered
over the earth and the Gospel is the pillar and bulwark of the church...it
is seemly that it should have four pillars."
Let us begin to read these four Gospels starting with Matthew. Matthew
is the first of these pillars and he begins his book with the genealogy
record of Jesus, tracing it all the way back to Abraham. And with the
mention of King David, Matthew brings out that Jesus is the King of th
Jews, the promised Messiah. Matthew’s Gospel account is consistently
linking Jesus life and work to the Old Testament promises and the
fulfillment of these promises.
In the next few week’s we hope to encourage, and empower you as you
look and reflect on the picture of Jesus as presented in these Four
Pillars of the New Testament. May your faith and your knowledge grow as we
look at Jesus and His love and care for us as we read and meditate upon
God’s Holy Word as given to us in these four Gospel’s.
