God So Loved the World
by Ronald Boelte
Why does it seem as if the whole world is upside down? God’s Word
seems to be ignored and evil is so prevalent. Well, if you have ever had
these feelings, you’re not alone. Even centuries ago during the time of
Old Testament prophets the world seemed gloomy for God’s People.
During the period of the Northern Kingdom’s fall into exile (722
B.C.) and the fall of the Southern Kingdom exile (586 B.C.), God forced
the Jews to live in captivity in Assyria and Babylonia. Even when they
were finally allowed to return to their homeland, they would never enjoy
the glory that the nation had during the reigns of David and Solomon.
What’s even more tragic is the fact that God had sent prophets to the
kings and the people to preach among a spiritually-bankrupt people.
However, unbelief, greed, social injustice, dishonesty, adultery,
broken homes, and even child sacrifice were the order of the day. As you
can see those days of the prophets are not so different than today. Those
prophets were the beacons of hope for their day, and while their message
was a warning to the ungodly, they also brought hope and comfort to the
believers.
As we look at the Minor Prophets and their messages, it is important to
understand that their messages are not minor messages. They are
called Minor because their messages are shorter in length than the other
Prophets books, which we call the Major Prophets. Each of these Minor
Prophets books had important messages for God’s people, and even today
they cry out to us.
