Apostle Paul
Read: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
To Ponder: Much of our prayers have to do with the physical
healing of ourselves or others. None of us likes to be ill, nor do we
like to watch any of our family members suffer with sickness. Paul, the
great apostle had several physical problems. He probably could not see
very well, and certainly all the physical beatings which he endured wore
on his body. Yet there was something which he wanted God to take away
from him, the "thorn in the flesh" which God chose to leave
him with.
Pray Today: for those who you know who have struggled with
illness, addiction, or depression for a long time.
Jesus Christ
Read: Matthew 26:36-45
To Ponder: There are times in everyone’s life when we think it
would just be easier to die than to do what we know we have to. An upcoming
test or evaluation, a trip to the doctor’s office, or to the tax man, an
uncomfortable conversation with a child, or perhaps a parent. All these
things can compel us to pray, just as Jesus did. We wish the problem to just
disappear from our sight. Yet even Jesus, was force to go through a painful,
uncomfortable event, and it seem as if His prayers had gone unanswered.
Pray Today: for someone you know facing a difficult decision or a
painful situation.
Daniel
Read: Daniel 10:1-15
To Ponder: Do you ever feel like your prayers hit the ceiling, and
bounce back at you. Often it seems as if God is busy with someone else and
your prayers are not as important as some of the other business He must to
attend to. Certainly, Daniel must have suffered through that feeling. He was
upset over a vision which he has received, and he goes into mourning because
of His fear about what will happen. And then, after many days, the angel of
the Lord comes to see Daniel, and explains that he had to battle Satan (the
king of Persia) to get there with Daniel’s answer.
Pray Today: for someone who is discouraged because of a problem that
they have struggled with for some time.
Elisha
Read: 2 Kings 6:8-23
To Ponder: Impossible problems, the ones without answers seem to
overwhelm us when we are not looking. Many times there is no good solution
for problems like these, and they keep us up nights worrying about the best
way to solve them. What to do with a wayward child, how to handle an
impossible boss, marriage difficulties which won’t go away, teachers (or
students) who bring out the worst in us. Elisha’s servant must have felt
very helpless when he saw those who had come for the sole purpose of
destroying Elisha and those around him. Yet even though he doesn’t pray,
there is already an unseen force to protect them.
Pray Today: for those you know who are facing the impossible, or a
very difficult situation.
Hannah
Read: 1 Samuel 1:1-28
To Ponder: Do you know a couple who are trying to have children? This
can be an extremely frustrating thing for people to go through. Often people
turn to God in prayer, hoping he will hear their deepest concerns, but not
having the assurance that He does. Hannah must have felt the same way.
Surely she often prayed to God for children, but never seemed to get an
answer. But God did hear her.
Pray Today: for someone you know who is having trouble conceiving
children, or is having trouble with their children.
The Helpless Widow
Read: Luke 18:1-8
To Ponder: Have you ever wondered if praying the same prayer, for
the same thing was the right thing to do? It seems if we can ask another
human to do something once for us, than why should we have to ask God
numerous times before He answers us. Jesus teaches us in this
parable that we are to ask continually for what we need, and that there
is a promise attached to this.
Pray Today: for those things which you have needed for a long
time, and those people who have long term needs.
