Spiritual maturity goes beyond the elementary teachings of salvation.
In addition, the wisdom of spiritual maturity is not the wisdom of the
world. As we mature, we get a taste of righteousness that helps us to
‘distinguish good from evil’ in ways we never even
suspected.

We naturally worry about changes and problems that occur in our lives. We
don’t understand how God could let such things happen to us. Although
complete understanding will not occur until we are in complete fellowship
with God in heaven, much confusion and pain can be soothed as we know God
better. Knowing God better is a component of spiritual maturity and gained
from studying God’s word that testifies to who He is.

The ability to discern false prophets and their teachings is a part of
spiritual maturity. Truly it is scary to see and read about the ‘new
varieties’ of Christianity. And too, when we disagree, we are often
accused of being arrogant. However, many variations of the Christian faith
can be ‘debunked’ by serious study of God’s word and by consideration
of the generations of respected scholars who have gone before us and who
have helped to put our faith into concise statements such as the Apostles’
Creed. Often, such heresies as exist today, are unknowingly developed by the
sincere, but spiritually immature. We should take care to study God’s word
so that we don’t contribute to the problem of false teachings.

Our developing spiritual maturity tends to put life in perspective–we
become aware of the ‘bigness’ of God and how insignificant we really are
if not for the love and care God has for us. It also helps us see that true
greatness submits to God and trusts Him for everything just as Jesus did
when He died as part of His father’s plan for us.

We all know it’s easier to spot faults in someone else than to
recognize them in ourselves. Spouses do it. Politicians do it. Kids on the
playground do it. Even churches and their members do it. We have our rules.
They have theirs. Our way is better . . . you get the idea. This legalistic
game is different than Wednesdays reading on false prophets, but be very
careful!! We can fall into error. And if we do disagree on some issues, we
still agree on the salvation Christ brings us. Spiritual maturity calls us
to be in unity with others. Let’s concentrate on Jesus and not each others’
rules.

Growing spiritual maturity –it’s not just personal. It affects the
Kingdom of God. Immaturity can put us at risk from the worlds dangers
and Satan’s schemes. That can make us less effective in being God’s
instruments in bringing others into the Kingdom. Actually, when you
think of it that way, seeking spiritual maturity isn’t an option if we
want to please God, who wants all to be saved.
