Spiritual Maturity: Is it your Taster's Choice?
by Sandi Geis and Mona Hunter

Life revolves around food. Think about it. We don’t eat to live, we live to eat. We can always find an excuse to eat, hungry or not. We eat when we’re stressed. We eat when we’re celebrating; we eat before bedtime. We eat when we’re with friends; we eat when we’re alone. And that’s in between breakfast, lunch and dinner!

On top of all that , there are cravings. Have you ever eaten just one peanut? How about one potato chip? Once you have a taste of these little delicacies, you only want more. Food has been a part of human culture since the good old days in the Garden of Eden. And, knowing all about our food cravings, God similarly tempts our taste buds for the words of scripture. 1 Peter 2:2-3 says:

" Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good."

Like the uncontrollable urge to eat one potato chip after another, God wants Christians to go beyond a "taste" of spirituality. He intends for us to have an uncontrollable desire for more. As the verses above describe, God wants us to grow up! We go to church on a Sunday, maybe even to a Bible Class. But this is merely a taste of God’s Word that should create in us the desire to learn more, and to put into practice what we learn. This is the journey to spiritual maturity. I believe, that to become more spiritually mature, we must first have the craving to do so.

But "why?", you may ask. Why isn’t enough to know the basics? Isn’t that all we need for eternal life? This month, Daily Prayer will address the subject of spiritual maturity. Beginning this week, we will explore some of the reasons a Christian should crave spiritual maturity.

Though, when it comes to food, many of us should be thinking about going on a diet, when it comes to our spiritual life, Pray that God will make you hungry for much more. Remember the old commercial, "No one can eat just one"? Let’s make this a "No one can read just one!" kind of week.
