Monday

How do we know that God doesn’t expect us to understand everything in the Bible?

Read: Ecclesiastes 11:5

Meditation: The writer of Ecclesiastes let’s us know that it’s okay if we don’t understand everything. While that may be uncomfortable for us at times (because we want to know everything) God tells us that’s the way it’s going to be. Being a Christian is not only about faith, but also about being able to humble yourself. This passage teaches us that we won’t understand everything, therefore we need to humble ourselves even if we may be uncomfortable not understanding.

Prayer Starter: Lord, this is a difficult concept to handle. Give me the humbleness to accept the fact that I don’t understand everything You tell me, but also give me the discipline to continue to study and learn all I can.

Tuesday

Who is the Holy Spirit?

Read: Matthew 8:19

Meditation: This passage may not add to our understanding of how the Holy Spirit is God, but it leaves no room for discussion that He is not. In this passage Jesus lists the Holy Spirit right along side Himself and the Father. The Holy Spirit is not just the power and energy of God, He is God.

Prayer Starter: Thank You Father for all of Your blessings in my life. Thank You for sending this wonderful counselor into my life. Help me to have the faith, and never doubt that the Spirit is God.

Wednesday

What is the special work of the Holy Spirit? - the wide sense.

Read: Hebrews 9:13-14

Meditation: The overall special work of the Spirit is Sanctification; which basically means He makes us holy. This gives us a good example of the Old Testament version of sanctification, and then tells us how much better the blood of Christ through the Holy Spirit is. This is called the wide sense because it’s talking about the church as a whole being sanctified. This tells us that the Spirit gives us all the opportunity to serve God.

Prayer Starter: Thank You Father for giving me this opportunity. Give me the wisdom and discernment to accept this work of the Holy Spirit.

Thursday

What is the special work of the Holy Spirit? - the narrow sense.

Read: Acts 9:1-9

Meditation: By nature we are spiritually blind, dead, and an enemy of God (just as Paul was). That’s why sanctification is so important. The Holy Spirit not only gives us the ability to accept Jesus, but after we do accept Him, the Spirit gives us the wisdom and strength to serve Him. Jesus appeared to Paul and got his attention. Then Paul was sent to Ananias so that he could pray over him and remove the scales from the eyes, so that he could see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit. This is where the Holy Spirit not only gives Paul the ability to serve God, but empowers Paul to serve God and lead a Godly life. You see the Spirit directly empowering Paul at the beginning of his ministry.

Prayer Starter: Thank You Spirit for making me holy in the eyes of God. Thank You for granting me the ability and the understanding that I need to not only accept Him, but to also serve Him.

Friday

What does it mean that the Holy Spirit "has called me by the Gospel?

Read: 1 Peter 2:9   2 Corinthians 4:6   Romans 15:13

Meditation: The Holy Spirit has invited and drawn us by the Gospel to partake of the spiritual blessings that are ours in Christ. The Gospel is the means by which the Holy Spirit offers us all the blessings of Christ and creates faith in us. These scriptures teach us that by the Gospel, the Holy Spirit gives us the saving knowledge of Jesus, so that we trust, rejoice, and find comfort in Him.

Prayer Starter: Father, let me rejoice in the Gospel everyday of my life. Thank You Spirit, for calling me by the joy and comfort of the Gospel. If not for this Gospel, and the Spirit’s work in me, then my life would be meaningless. Help me to remember this in everything that I do.

Saturday

Why is everyone not saved?

Read: 1 Timothy 2:4   Matthew 23:37

Meditation:
While God wants us all to be saved, there are people who just won’t accept it. There are people who reject Him. If you have time, read Matthew 22:1-10 or Luke 14:16-24 as well. These are examples of people who are invited and refuse the invitation. If we don’t recognize the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we will fall into this same category. It’s that important. Some people are blind and have no intention of accepting something they can’t see or touch. Don’t be one of these people.

Prayer Starter: Thank You Father first of all for Your son, which granted me my salvation. Thank You also for sending the Spirit as a counselor, one whom will give me the ability to accept Jesus’ sacrifice. Help me to place the work of the Spirit in my life at the highest level. Finally, thank You Father for Your everlasting grace, love, and discipline.
