The Triune God: God the Holy Spirit
Part 9 on the Apostles Creed by BJ Armstrong

"I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen."
- 3rd Article of the Apostles Creed.

We pick up our study in the Apostles Creed today with one of the more confusing aspects in all of Christian teachings. Who is the Holy Spirit? Is He God, or just the energy of God? Depending on who you ask, answers to these two questions could differ from time to time. Why is this?

We have to realize that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Triune God, and when you try to explain or understand this concept it’s going to get confusing. You can’t fully explain or understand the concept of "Three Persons, One God", because the fact is, God never intended for us to do this. This, as much as anything, is a matter of faith. If you have to have something proved to you to believe it, then you will never grasp this subject. God calls upon us to have faith in many things we don’t understand, and this is certainly one of them. So why study it?

Just because we can’t fully understand something doesn’t mean we shouldn’t study it. There are many things that we can understand, and if we don’t have the discipline to study, we will never get to that point; therefore we will never be able to fully appreciate or enjoy many of God’s promises in our lives. Therefore, the goal of our devotions is to study as rigorously as we can, so that we can understand as much about it as we can.

Remember, as confusing as the Father and the Son are, the Holy Spirit can be even more confusing. The truth is, the Holy Spirit often gets overlooked because so much is given to the Father and the Son; and while that’s okay, that doesn’t make the Holy Spirit any less important.

The Spirit has distinct roles in our lives just like the other two do. As you study this week, keep in mind that everything you read may not register at first. When it get’s confusing and you don’t understand, just remember that the Holy Spirit is a unique person of God who calls out to us so that we might believe.
