In an article that ran in The Lawton Sunday Constitution on September 21, 1997 Colonel Christopher A. Kelly, the commander of the Altus Air Force Base acknowledged Captain Eugene "Andy" Anderson as one of the eight former prisoners of war who now live in Southwest Oklahoma. He was incarcerated on September 13, 1944 by the Germans in Barth, Germany, which is located approximately 160 kilometers north of Berlin, and was not released until May 13, 1945. Andy, the name that Eugene is known by, is a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Altus. We, as members of the Lutheran Ministries Partnership would like to join Altus in recognizing Andy for his willingness to serve his country, and also would like all of the members to include in their prayers the thousands of POW/MIA servicemen who are still missing.
