The Origin of the Universe:
Evolution or Creation?
by B.J. Armstrong.
The theory of "intelligent design," although not a theory as
far as Christians are concerned, is being debated by the Kansas school
board as an alternate teaching to evolution. Recently, the school board
has received complaints about the teaching of evolution as the only theory
about the origin of the universe. While it is doubtful that
"creation" as it is taught in the Bible will ever see the light
of day in the classrooms again, it’s encouraging to see Christians stand
up and try to, at least, get the word out that evolution is, in some
cases, less consistent with scientific findings than "intelligent
design". In a recent survey done by the Kansas City Star, results
show that 55 percent of the people in Kansas would like to see
"intelligent design" taught along with evolution in the
curriculum as a contrasting theory about the origin of the earth. While
the consensus is that approval will never happen, it is encouraging to see
something in the Bible making its way to the table in state government.
As Christians, we should submit to government authority concerning
education in our public schools, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be
vocal about it. Most would agree, Christians included, that separation of
church and state is necessary in our nation. However, this
"intelligent design" theory is a shot at bringing God into our
public schools without getting all religious about it. Why can’t we have
"intelligent design" taught as a contrasting philosophy to
evolution? Some scientists will say, and in fact have said, that
"those who don’t like evolution don’t know anything about
science." However, other scientists will tell you that recent
discoveries function better with "intelligent design" than with
evolution. Regardless of the outcome of this petition, we can be
encouraged that Christians have become active and vocal in their
government again.
